I really, really loved itDear Mr. Calhoun, I read your two books. One of theme is " Fair Play ". I really loved it because I like dinosours and I want to be a dinosour searcher like Fenton.I read your book in Turkish. This summer I want to read your other books in English. The " Fair Play " was my term homework. Next week I'll talk abaut it in my class.By the way I couldn't find any information abaut you ( as the outher of the book ). If you give me information abaut yourself it will help my homework and my friends will learn more abaut you and this will make me happy.Sincerelly, Mehmet
I loved it!Dear Mr. Calhoun, I am a sixth grade student who has read every one of your Dinosaur Dectective books and am waiting every day for number eight and nine. I think you should keep the books going until you solve ALL the mysteries - since I want to be a dinosaur detective myself when I grow-up I know this will take a long, long time. This summer I am going on a week long dinosaur digging camping trip. I can't wait to live what I read about in your books. If you have time, could you please write back to me? I would really like to show a letter from you to my friends at school. I'm a slow reader, slowest in my class, but my teacher and parents are very nice and they know I will always read anything about dinosaurs. Thasnk you sOOO much for writing about a boy who is just like me. Sincerely, Stephen Hoffner-McCall 311 Summit Rd. Media, PA 19063 610-565-7196

Feast of Bones
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (March, 1990)
Average review score:

Feast of Bones is a worthy wartime readHaving stumbled across Daniel Bolger's Feast of Bones in a used bookstore, I had no idea of the quality of the narrative, character development, and objectivity of the point of view. Since it takes place in Russia and Afganistan, and it takes the Russian paratrooper sight-line, the reader might find it difficult at first, if one is hardliner anti-Soviet. Feast of Bones reminds me of other novels written by 'natives,' like Das Boot. Bolger gets inside the Russian military mind with his lead character Desantnik D. I. Donslov's singleminded commitment to fighting a war intuitively, instinctively, and historically. I was so impressed by Bolger's ability to create fiction from fact that I turned to Amazon.com to find anything else he's done, besides his military textbooks, only to find that Feast of Bones is out of print. For a 1990 title, it's too bad, and warrior readers' loss. Knowing this, I'll keep my copy... wishing that Bolger would write another novel one of these days.
Captures the Warrior Ethos Better than Any Novel (save one)I have read every one of Colonel Dan Bolger's books. This one is his best in my opinion. His writing is crisp, his knowledge of soldiers and soldiering is unequivocal, and the story is compelling without some of the folksy writing that occassionally works its way into his non-fiction works. His background, both military and academic, guarantee the authenticity of the details that make this compelling reading. Like Red Army, by Ralph Peters, it provides an insight into the only force that routinely gave American military leaders sleepless nights. I had the privilege of serving with Colonel Bolger in the 101st Airborne and he convinced me to major in military history at West Point many years ago in just 3 minutes. If you can get your hands on this book, read it. Infantry Officers will find Cadet Donskov's training particulary compelling and may bring back a few flashbacks from Darby Phase. If you want to know the only novel that captures the warrior ethic better (my opinion only) email me.

masterpieceI almost died laughing at this book. I can offer no greater encomium.
Pinkwater at his bestThis collection of stories (most of which aird on NPR, I believe) is the best book on my bookshelf. The wrighting is brilliant, and humorous. Each piece is enjoyable because it is easy to identify with the events. I am always thinking about one story or another from this book, becuse they apply to real life so well. Buy this book if you are a fan of funny, honest stories.

Flower Fables
Published in Hardcover by Okey-Doke Products (May, 1998)
Average review score:

Flower FablesThis was the most enchanting book I think that I have ever read. Such beautiful illustrations.
A beautifully illustrated compilation of fables. This discovery of unpublished fables by Louisa May Alcott should be read by children during their important impressionable years. The illustrations are beautiful and complimentary to the text. While classics of Louisa May Alcott, Little Women and Little Men, are for the early teens, these fables for the preteens tease the imagination in a magical way. This sort of alternative to the upbringing of children by the video media is sorely needed and provided by Flower Fables.

Forces of Change : A New View of Nature
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (April, 2000)
Average review score:

A book to keep, to teach from, to learn fromI received this book as a gift. I loved it & recognized that others could benefit from reading it. So I am requiring my university environmental students to use the book.
The photos are great, the writing insightful & thought-provoking, and content is great. It will warn you of some environmental problems, but will also give you hope for our future.
forces of change may force changeGeorgeous photos! It's a collection of really very thought provoking essays. Cutler's, Overpecks, and Quammens were especially interesting. The sum total of the intelligence here is astounding. If tomorrow's leaders could take the time to even glance at this collection we'd all benefit. Not necessarily because solutions are offered but because one can't read these essays without taking the planets past, present and future much more seriously.

Published in Mass Market Paperback by Encanto Books (September, 1999)
Average review score:

A beautifully written book!Elaine Alberro spins a charming, romantic tale of two people with vastly different outlooks on life. I found myself so caught up in Alberro's multilayered characters and emotional scenes, I read FOREVER TRUE in one sitting. A marvelous read.
Emotional & exciting!Elaine Alberro writes with passion & heart, telling the romance between Antonio and Elena, who meet at her Sweet Fifteen gala. Without giving away too much of the book, eight years has passed since they dated as kids, and the love is still there. This story is one for the keeper shelves!

Lovely Poems! This is a stunningly beautiful and touching collection, full of heart.
A Masterwork of American PoetryKate Daniels has given our literature a book of poems that deserves to take its place with the finest poetic sequences of the century. Foxgloves and Hedgehog Days: Secrets in a Countryman's Garden
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (June, 1997)
Average review score:

Magic is in your garden, if you know where and how to lookI ordered this little book on a whim (the beautiful artwork on the cover first attracted me)and it turned out to be a treasure. Usually a fast reader, I made myself read only one story a day to make it last longer. Gardening is hard work and when you are feeling up to your ears in bugs and weeds, it helps to share the delights of a fellow gardener who also knows how hard it all is but who can remind you why you do it - for the special joy of watching the flowers bloom at last and the animals play in your little piece of paradise. I had a wonderful time imagining myself in his garden and I think I will be a bit more sensitive to the happenings in my own garden in the future. This would make a great gift for birthday, get well, etc.
If you like Brambly Hedge, you will like this one.It is possible to live the kind of life you want, but first, you must know what you want, decide how you are going to get there, and then do it. This man did just that, and this book describes what he found.
